The Azores Islands are a true undiscovered Trail Running paradise, with a dramatic wilderness, many technical tracks well marked and maintained and rocky ridges towering over 2000 m from the sea: a real challenge for any trail runner.
On the 17th of August 2019 took place at Sao Jorge Island the 2dn edition of the race Trail Run de Rosais, organized by Dragon Island Trail Club, a sports club born out of the passion of 5 friends who work on the development of trail running on all the Islands.
The TRM Team was at the starting line with Coach Michele, who has fully enjoyed the longest competition, 34 km and 1530 m D+. A 17 km and a 12 Km walk were also available.
The race track starts in Rosais village, in the center of the Island, and climbing over the crest descends down the cliffs till the dramatic Faja de Joao Dias. Then up, again back to the crest: “400 m D+ and 400 m D- in less than 4 km”. The Fajas are a unique characteristic of Sao Jorge, tiny cultivated areas, almost botanical gardens, isolated at the feet of the cliffs at sea level, where a small islander communities lives. Real small Eden.
The race track develops then on the North Western part of the Island till Punta dos Rosais, where the abandoned lighthouse signs the return point.
This is a race track that never bores and also allows to keep incredibly fast average paces. You will run on dirty roads, single tracks though forests and pastures overlooking the Ocean, dry stone walls made of black and red lava. Running the Trail Run de Rosais will bring you back at the origin of this sport. Furthermore the racetrack is perfectly marked so you’ll not be distracted looking for the next mark, the refreshment points and check points with assistance are well organised.
Congratulations to the Dragon Island Trail Club, this competition shows that passion and love for Trail Running make it possible to realize amazing sport events.
Coach Michele Tasselli with a great satisfaction ranked 4th Overall in 4h15min.
